Lambs are the youngest, the most fragile of the flock. They are constantly watched by the mother ewe, the shepherd-and yes, the wolf. Because of their inexperience and extreme vulnerability, the shepherd treats them with special care.
We too have young ones who need a wise and gentle shepherd. And accordingly, we lavish them with tender love, knowing what to overlook, and when to gently guide and direct.
While our own children are the first ones we think of, are there not other lambs among us-children and young people in our neighborhoods and in our churches-that we can gently nurture and encourage?
Just as all babies are born with a great need for love that they will never outgrow, all of us, lambs and sheep alike, are born with a need for encouragement that never tires of its expression. How easy it is done, how mighty is its impact. Encouragement is oxygen to the soul and revives tender hearts.
